DENTAL CARE COMES TO SCHOOL:
Nurse Leader Donna Callahan brought an exciting new program to the school on January 4th. Mobile Dentists cleaned, examined, and did flouride treatments on the teeth of 11 children. Several of them also had protective sealants applied to their permanent teeth. This was a savings to parents of several hundreds of dollars. We encourage all parents to have their children’s teeth cared for on a regular basis. POSTURAL SCREENING:
Parents who elected not to have postural screening in school –please don’t forget to turn in your MD notes, as this is a state law. This will save time and avoid follow up calls to you.
REMINDER GRADE SEVEN PHYSICALS AND IMMUNIZATIONS:
Reminder—We still need many Grade 6 physicals and proof of Tetanus booster. If you need another form, please call me. This is a mandate of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health. |

Don’t Miss Out—Valentine Pencils on Sale in the Library, 50 cents each!
Now that winter is finally here, it’s a perfect time to curl up with a good book. Whether students get their books from CMS or the Palmer Public Library, we hope all families are reading together and offering lots of encouragement. Here at CMS, we are firing up our book clubs again. Students at each grade level read the same book and then discuss it over a pizza lunch. In order to have enough funds to cover these lunches, the library will be selling Valentine pencils Feb. 7-14, for 50 cents each. All students are welcome to join a book club and should listen to morning announcements for meeting times.
Closely related to reading is writing—all of our students work hard in their classes every day honing their writing skills. To this end, each year Ms. Urban takes a group of 6th graders to a special day of writing at UMASS, sponsored by the Western Mass. Writing Project. This year in particular we have many gifted writers in the 6th grade, which made it hard for their ELA teachers to choose just 10 students from each team, but we hope to hold a similar program here at Converse later this year for everyone. At UMASS on Friday, Jan. 12, our students joined other kids from all over the area, and Sammi Taylor was chosen to read her poem to the whole group; the poem to the right shows off what she learned about metaphors. |
