To Listen Responsibly

Listener lacks tolerance or fails to give respect to speakers who offer views that are different or challenging from his/her own.

Listener recognizes differing, unfamiliar and/or challenging spoken viewpoints and acts in a manner that does not interfere with rights of others.

Listener shows tolerance and understanding of differing, unfamiliar and/or challenging spoken viewpoints;  and responds to them in a way that shows respect for the speaker’s rights.

Listener consistently shows tolerance for and understanding of differing, unfamiliar and/or challenging spoken viewpoints and respectfully interacts with or responds to the speaker/presentation to clarify views that are not easily understood or accepted;  applies other relevant information in seeking understanding of speaker’s/presentation’s viewpoint.

 

To Follow Directions

Listener rarely follows multi step instructions;  often requires assistance or needs to have them repeated before attempting to carry them out.

Listener sometimes follows clear multi step instructions, but generally needs instructions repeated if they have not been fully understood and only occasionally anticipates or makes inferences from these instructions.

Listener usually follows clear multi step instructions;  seeks clarification when needed;  and anticipates or makes inferences from these instructions.

Listener consistently and effectively follows clear multi step instructions;  seeks clarifications when necessary;  and anticipates or makes inferences from these instructions.  Listener generalizes instructions.

To Gain Basic Information

Listener fails to extract sufficient information from listening sources to participate in the specific purpose or task.

Listener extracts information from a variety of listening sources, but misses some key points critical to the specific purpose or task.

Listener extracts basic information from a variety of listening sources, and uses the information for a specific purpose or task. (discussion, research, summary, answering questions, artistic depiction, etc.)

Listener extracts supporting ideas as well as basic information from a variety of listening sources, and uses the information for a specific purpose or task.

 

To Analyze Information

Listener misses obvious examples of bias, inflection, dialect, tone, technique, fact vs. opinion, irrelevant or erroneous information, etc.

Listener sometimes identifies obvious examples of bias, inflection, dialect, tone, technique, fact vs. opinion, irrelevant or erroneous information, etc.

Listener identifies obvious examples of bias, inflection, dialect, tone (humor, sarcasm, etc.), technique, fact vs. opinion, irrelevant or erroneous information, etc.
